The Power of Plants in Your Pot.
My Grandma Was Living Proof of the Power of Tea
My favorite memories of tea were drinking tea with my Grandma. She always had a pot of ‘Red Rose’ tea on the table and as soon as it was empty, she filled it up again…three tea bags, to be exact. As a life-long student of ‘all things health’, I would always tell my Grandma about what I was learning. When I was learning about the health benefits of tea, she exclaimed very exuberantly, ‘I drink 14 cups of tea a day!’. And that was true…although I used to always tease her that she took tea with her cream and sugar as she always added lots of cream and two heaping teaspoons of sugar to her tea. Well, all that I learned must have been true as my Grandma lived until 102 years of age and with no known health problems.
Good folk medicine promotes tea as an excellent ‘health tonic‘. Black tea is especially known for its ability to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, ward off inflammation linked to chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and aging. White tea is known for the same with the addition of helping to fight cancer and may be as powerful as green tea, if not more. Ancient medicine touts tea as a way to treat respiratory ailments, skin ulcers, wounds, stomach problems, insomnia, and even ‘superbugs.’ Tea is also known to help reduce sweet cravings and boost energy, which can help avoid type 2 diabetes and undesirable body fat.
Tea is known to contain:
– Catechins: strengthens immune system
– ECGC: antioxidant
– Flavonoids: may help to fight allergies, carcinogens (substances that cause cancer), inflammation (disease cannot survive in an environment with no inflammation), and viruses
– Flavanols, & Flanonols: may help lower the risk of developing heart disease, some forms of cancer, and diabetes
– L-theanine: provides a sense of relaxation and stress relief
– Tannins: may help to inhibit plaque buildup that causes heart attacks and strokes
– Polyphenols: protect your body by trapping free-radical molecules and get rid of them before they can cause damage to the body
– Theaflavins: found in black and green tea that may help lower the risk of heart disease and cancer because of their antiviral and anti-cancer effects.
Black tea provides the most antioxidants after a short steep in hot water; white tea, the longer time; and green tea produced the most antioxidants after 2 hours of steeping.

Did You Know…all tea comes from the same plant – Camillia sinensis. It is only how it is harvested and put through the process of production that differentiates one from the other.
A tea by any other name is not as special…
